“I got such wonderful things – I’m almost jealous of myself!” exclaimed my six-year-old niece Stella after opening her birthday presents. I sort of feel the same way about my family, my friends, and my dogs. Thank you for being so wonderful! ♥

Comments Off on a visit from mastamariner!

As most of you already know, our three oldest dogs all come from a kennel in England called Mastamariner, where I used to work as a kennel girl. Aska and Sirius have been with me since they were puppies, but Ruth lived at the kennel for eight years and eight months before she came to join me in Sweden. Of course, Ruth is very much missed there, and now that she was due to celebrate her 13th birthday, my “kennel parents” Catherine and Graham decided to visit us. We were joined by our friend Matilda, who also used to work at the kennel and who has three Golden Retrievers from there.

The Mastamariners – Ben, Toby, Sonar, Sirius, Ruth & Aska!

We had a few fun days together with long walks, a sausage barbecue in the woods, lots of swimming for the dogs, blueberry picking, a visit to Mårbacka (memorial home of Selma Lagerlöf, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature) followed by a play (The Adventures of Nils Holgersson, Lagerlöf’s most famous novel) in a barn converted to a theatre, trips to an old mill and a fabulous ice cream café, and of course lots of tea and conversations. I only wish that they could have stayed longer! :)

You can read Catherine’s words about Ruth and about their visit on Facebook, by clicking here. Thank you for coming to see us, Catherine, Graham, and Matilda!

At the moment, my thoughts keep straying to an upcoming trip to the mountains, On June 9, I’m travelling to Grövelsjön with my friends Gittan, Anna, and Kicki – all of us with our dogs, of course. :) I’m filled with longing and anticipation. I’m daydreaming and planning; I’m looking at a new pair of hiking trousers, and hiking boots. I’m hoping that my favourite lens will be back from being repaired by then. I wonder if we will see as many lovely reindeer calves this year as Gittan and I did back in 2009?

Sure, going abroad to warm places also has its charm, and sometimes I do long to swim in a warm ocean. But it’s not the same longing as the one that I feel for the mountains. It’s my soul that wants to go there. It’s a longing that I only feel for the places I call home – where I grew up, where I live now, and England – and for the mountains.

I wanted to buy Tintin his very own Snowy, but Erik thought that it was “unnecessary”?! :O

My first visit to the Gothenburg Book Fair. Yes, ever. We came home with a very shiny pen (pictured above), three crocheting books for me and a book on folklore creatures for Erik, as well as a couple of Christmas books. A big thank-you to Anna and Finn who came over to dog-sit our pups today; we couldn’t have had this lovely day out together without your help. ♥ Now, I’m absolutely knackered and I’m off to bed to do some spooining with Sirius and Tintin.

Tack!
The pictures of me and Erik together were of course taken by Gittan. Thank you!

Last week, we spent a few incredible days up in the mountains around Grövelsjön, together with our dearest Gittan and her Bernese Mountain girls Yakima and Hateya. The weather was unbeliavable, sunny and warm with almost no wind. The woollen underwear, hats, and gloves that we had so carefully packed remained in our bags, while we wore t-shirts and tank tops and enjoyed the warmth. Since we had several older dogs with us, we kept our hikes relatively short, but with lots of “fika” breaks by little streams. :) Yes, it was truly the perfect vacation; something to remember and warm us in the long winter to come. ♥

We’ve had a glorious weekend with our wonderful friends Anna and Mikael, staying in Anna’s family’s cottage outside of Säffle. It’s right by the great lake of Vänern, with its own rock beach, and a wood full of giant blueberries. We have talked, played cards and games and badminton, eaten yummy food, gone swimming in the lake, visited a huge collector’s/flea market, and so on. In other words, we’ve enjoyed summer to the fullest, and the dogs seemed to think that they had found a piece of Heaven on Earth. :)

We returned home yesterday and that was lovely as well, after more than four weeks away. It was so good to get back to my space. I can’t help but adjust to other people when I’m around them; it’s something I do without thinking about it and without effort. It’s a good trait to have sometimes, but it makes me tired to always have my “emotional antennae” out to figure out what others want, so it’s very relaxing to close the door and just be by myself. I slept most of the day yesterday, and I’ve been tired and slept for most of today as well. During the day, I started feeling strange with dizziness, nausea, fever, head and muscle ache, so in the afternoon I went to see a doctor. He suspected borrelia after a tick bite, so he prescribed penicillin. And it was the first tick bite of my life, as well! I’ve slept for the rest of the afternoon and evening and I do feel better now, thank goodness. I hope that I keep improving, because now that we’re back with the woods around the corner I can’t wait to go tracking with Tintin again. And I want to do some rally training with Sirius – I think I’m going to sign us up for another couple of competitions in August. :D

england, day five – a morning in alton

dogs, life in general, people, places
2 Comments

Better late than never, right? I’ve still got a few days of photos from England to catch up with, and since it’s still pouring down outside here I thought it would be a good project for today. :)

Our fifth day in England was a Saturday and everyone was busy preparing for the seniors’ birthday party the following day. Since any kind of food preparation usually works better without my involvement, Erik and I went into the nearby town of Alton to explore the Farmers’ Market. We took two of the collie youngters, Horace and Atlas, with us for some social training, and we had a great time.

goldiesar

Goldies waiting for their breakfast in the morning. ♥

müsli

The human breakfast isn’t bad, either – Catherine’s home mixed muesli is to die for!
(Literally, even, if your name is Erik and you happen to eat a hazelnut… :P)

erik, horace & atlas

Erik with Horace and Atlas, chilling outside the pet shop. The Farmers’ Market up the street was pretty
crowded and we were busy guiding the young dogs there, so I didn’t take any photos of the market itself.

horace

We bought some smoked pig ears at the pet shop, and Horace declared that he’d never seen anything so strange in his life!

atlas

Atlas was also a little suspicious – were they really supposed to EAT the ears?!

horace

But they both caught on quickly!

atlas

Still, the ruddy ears kept trying to escape – it took Atlas a while to realise he could hold onto it with his paws. :)

atlas

Gorgeous, handsome Atlas, about 6 months old.

horace

Horace helped me write some postcards and put on the appropriate stamps and labels.

horace

“So, it goes on there, next to the stamps…”

atlas

Atlas cuddles. ♥

horace

Horace the Runt, growing into a handsome, sporty boy.

Atlas, looking gorgeous again.

erik & goldisar

At home, we had to make up for lost cuddle time with the Goldies.

kirsty & goldiesar

Kirsty took a break from cooking to help out with the Goldie snuggles.

tiber

Remember back in April, when I wrote about the loss of my favourite Goldie, Captain? It was difficult to visit Mastamariner, knowing that he wouldn’t be there. But when Erik and I returned from our day out, Captain’s grandson Tiber walked up to me, bouncing slightly as though he had springs under his paws, and gently pressed his muzzle to my stomach. I almost started crying, becuse that was exactly what Captain would always do. He may be gone from the house, but part of him lives on in his kind, gentle children and grandchildren. ♥
